So lets get the facts straight. According to an article posted from CBC, apparently there are way too many Canadian students pursuing a medical degree outside of Canada. In fact, while having a chat with a few fellow CSA's (Canadians who have studied abroad) and IMG's (international medical graduates), we quickly came to a consensus that there were in fact more Canadians studying medicine OUTSIDE of Canada then there are studying IN Canada! Shocking?
Well it shouldn't be. It's great that there are so many young Canadians who want to pursue the crazy and intense live of a physician, albeit rewarding both financially and emotionally (but not all the time) but the fact that there are not enough spots for the thousands of qualified and even more thousands of not-so-qualified students only pushes them to seek their medical degree elsewhere. The Caribbean. Europe. Asia. Indian (which is part of Asia right?) Australia. Africa. Basically every continent outside of North America apart from the Antarctic (although if there was a medical school there, I wouldn't be surprised to find a few hundred students enrolled there too =P) Regardless of where students decide to study medicine, lets face it....human anatomy doesn't change whether you studied at Harvard or McGill or Botswana. The delivery may be somewhat different but the content will always be the same. And now with the internet at our disposal, Wikipedia and WebMD have become a part of a medical students arsenal for learning. What it all comes down to is how well they score on their national exams, how well they interview and ultimately, how well they "FIT" into the system.
